Fredericksburg area paving and infrastructure contractor Edward Dalrymple, Jr. is set to become chairman of Virginia’s State Board for Community Colleges when the panel meets in mid-July. Dalrymple has been a strong supporter of VCCS workforce programs, served as vice-chair of the board last year and joined the panel in July of 2017.

Roanoke area health care executive Nathaniel Bishop will become vice-chair of the board, which is the governing body for the state’s community college system. Bishop’s long career in health care followed a 14-year stint in law enforcement. He joined the VCCS State Board in July 2016.

In addition, Governor Ralph Northam appointed four new members to the 15- member panel:
• Dana Beckton of Chesapeake, Chief Diversity Officer, Sentara Healthcare
• Brenda D. Calderon, PhD of Alexandria
• Darius A. Johnson of Richmond, Vice President of Employee Engagement and Development, Dominion Energy
• Ashby Kilgore of Newport News, Retired Superintendent, Newport News Public Schools

“It’s a pleasure to welcome these new members to our Board,” said Dalrymple. “We have a lot of work to do this coming year as people look to their community college to keep moving forward despite the pandemic, to recover from losing their job and training for their next career, and to find ways to leverage higher education to advance the causes of equity and social justice. The backgrounds and perspectives these new members offer will be invaluable as we respond to these pressing needs across Virginia.”

The new board members succeed Dr. Susan Gooden, Dr. Joseph Smiddy, Sen. Walter Stosch, and Robin Sullenberger.

The VCCS State Board is scheduled to meet July 15-16. Read more about the body here.
