Homemade cupcakes and chili attracted hungry office workers, generating more than $4,400 for the Great Expectations program at John Tyler Community College.
“The fundraiser provides necessary items to be successful in college, but it also shows students how working together towards a valuable goal can change the lives of others,” said Elizabeth McKey, Great Expectations program coach at JTCC.
“The time and generosity of so many people at JTCC, local businesses and the community help make Great Expectations a success for our students. It is also the students themselves who decide to work through obstacles and to utilize available resources. Their effort and motivation are essential to the success as well.”
Great Expectations participants from across the state will gather in Richmond later this month for networking and graduation ceremonies. The program, a signature initiative of the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education and Virginia’s Community Colleges, is entering its second decade of service helping foster youth achieve independence and become productive members of the community.
