With higher education costs skyrocketing both across the commonwealth and nationwide, Virginia’s Community Colleges remain a smart choice for students who are beginning post secondary education or returning to college mid-career.
Virginia’s Community Colleges are meeting an affordable tuition goal: tuition will not exceed half of the average cost to attend a public four-year institution in Virginia.
For the 2013-14 academic year, in-state tuition and mandatory fees for our colleges will be approximately $3900 for two semesters of full-time study (15 credit hours per semester), or about 37 percent of the average in-state tuition and fees at Virginia’s public universities (projected at $10,332).
Tuition rates set by the State Board for Community Colleges for the 2013-14 academic year (adopted May 2013) are as follows:
- Virginia Resident – $122.50 per credit hour, plus a $7.50 mandatory technology fee for all credit courses, for a total of $130 per credit hour
- Out-of-State Resident – $299.10 per credit hour, plus a $7.50 mandatory technology fee and an $18 capital fee, for a total of $324.60 per credit hour
A tuition differential is charged at Northern Virginia, at J. Sargeant Reynolds, and at Thomas Nelson, Virginia Western and Tidewater community colleges. In addition, most Virginia Community Colleges have some local fees. Please consult your individual community college for complete information about tuition at your college and any local parking or student activity fees that may apply.
