Phi Theta Kappa is the leading honor society for two-year colleges. Students are eligible for membership when they have achieved a 3.5 grade point average or higher after having completed the first 12 credit hours toward their degree. The program is designed to recognize high achieving students, their leadership abilities, and service to others.

How do I know about Phi Theta Kappa? I was very fortunate to be a member of the Alpha Eta Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at DSLCC. I was also an All-Virginia Academic Team member – having had the benefit of being nurtured and supported by our DSLCC advisors.

And now, having come full circle, I have the privilege of being a DSLCC PTK advisor – supporting, mentoring, challenging, and encouraging the next group of exceptional individuals.

The All-Virginia Academic Team members are students that have not only excelled academically, but also have supported their fellow students, as well as organizations, churches, schools, and the like within their community. They have a heart of excellence and service. They understand the value of a job well done and the sense of fulfillment that only comes from giving your best effort. They do not wait for others to dictate their futures but move forward with determination and humility.

Many of these students attend college full-time while working, or raising a family, or caring for a family member, and volunteering on campus and in their community. Some have overcome unthinkable obstacles like homelessness. Others are still teenagers responsible for raising and supporting their siblings. Some have even had to reinvent or re-establish themselves in society.

All-Virginia Academic Team members are then also considered for the Coca Cola Community College Academic Team and the All-USA Academic Team. These very prestigious designations offer scholarships to best of the best made possible by sponsorships from Coca Cola, the Follet Higher Education Group, and the American Association of Community Colleges.

The 2020 Phi Theta Kappa All-Virginia Academic Team is just as inspiring! I commend them, those that have come before them, and all those that follow.

Congratulations to these exceptional individuals!

PTK partners with a number of corporate sponsors to recognize, and – in some cases – provide scholarships to high achieving students.
