The nominations process for the inaugural Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Culture Council is underway. The State Board approved the council at its last meeting, making the council a part of policy (VCCS policy number 2.4.7).

The mission of this council is to assist the system’s colleges and agencies by identifying needs, researching and sharing best practices, and, where necessary, proposing policies that have an impact on the learning and work environments of students and employees. This DEIC council will work with and shall meet at least three times a year.

Each president has been asked to nominate individuals from their colleges to serve on the council by Sept. 16. The nominations are for the following seats:

Institutional Roles

  • Chief Human Resources Officer
  • Public Relations/Marketing staff/faculty
  • Institutional Advancement
  • Affinity Stakeholders
  • Students (2 positions, one representing older, non-traditional student, could be ALICE)
  • Hispanic/Latino*
  • Asian American/Pacific Islander *
  • Native American*
  • ALICE *
  • Disability *
  • LGBTQ *
  • Military veteran *

One representative will represent the group of colleges from each category. Presidents should nominate only one individual to be considered for this role.

  • MGCC, ESCC, PDCCC, PHCC, VHCC, WCC
  • BRCC, CVCC, DCC, MECC, RCC, SSVCC, SWVCC
  • GCC, LRCC, NRCC, VPCC), PVCC, VWCC, SSC
  • BCC, JSRCC, TCC, NOVA, SO

Other positions on the council are appointments, with Chancellor Morrissey appointed a president to serve.  Other appointments will be requested from the following organizations.

  • Vice President/Finance and Administration – Appointed by Administrative Services Council
  • Vice President (2 positions, only one from Academics) – Appointed by ASAC
  • Vice President/Workforce Development (or highest rank at college – Appointed by WDAC
  • Dean/Director (2 positions, one dean and one director) – Appointed by CODD
  • Institutional Research/System office – Appointed by Senior Vice Chancellor/Academic and Workforce Programs
  • Black Concerns Commission – Appointed by BCC
  • Chancellor’s Faculty Advisory Committee – Appointed by CFAC
  • Virginia Community Colleges Association – Appointed by VCCA

The first Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Culture Council will create its charter and other governance roles.
