VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois makes the case to U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott (L.) and Scott’s House Education Committee that federal financial aid should be available to non-credit career training students, including those in VCCS FastForward programs.

“Great Expectations helped me feel like I am actually seen,” says Kaili Landis.
VCCS’s Great Expectations program helps students who are aging out of the foster care system build a new support system. That’s a major challenge in Virginia, where many young people leave foster care without finding a new permanent home.

The Chronicle of Higher Education spotlights the Great Expectations program at Virginia Highlands Community College in a video report.

More than 30,000 students graduated from Virginia’s Community Colleges in May, participating in commencement exercises across the state and earning associate degrees in addition to other academic and career credentials. This month, the Chancellor’s Syllabus will bring you some of the “pearls of wisdom” from our 2019 VCCS graduation speakers.

Congratulations are in order – again – for VCCS employees who drive state-owned vehicles. For the second year in a row, the Virginia Office of Fleet Management Services has recognized VCCS for operating our state-owned fleet safely. “I personally think it is pretty amazing that an agency the size of ours can drive over 1,000,000 miles with no chargeable accidents,” said Bert Jones, VCCS associate vice-chancellor for facilities management services. “Job well done to everyone who drives our cars!”

Other Higher Ed News of Note:

Virginia Tech is asking 1,500 members of its incoming class to – well -- not show up this fall. They’re offering students incentives to delay coming to Blacksburg for a year, including paying for them to attend a Virginia Community College for a year.
• Nearly 70 students graduating high school this month already earned their associate degree from John Tyler Community College, reminding us just how powerful Dual Enrollment programs can be when fully leveraged.
• And, Virginia policymakers and higher education advocates ponder what’s next following the upcoming one-year tuition freeze at public colleges and universities.
