Helping Virginians Achieve the American Dream
“We’re at a turning point in realizing our mission as community colleges.” – Craig Herndon

Considering recent events, it is no surprise that Craig Herndon is excited about the role of workforce training as Virginia’s Community Colleges enter our second 50 years of strengthening lives and communities statewide. Community colleges have offered workforce training programs for many years to prepare Virginians for industry credentials and jobs that do not necessarily require traditional college degrees. However, until recently, there was little or no funding to help students pay for the short-term, non-credit courses.

Northern Virginia Community College was recently awarded the prestigious 2016 HEED Award by the owner and publisher of Insight into Diversity Magazine, Lenore Pearlstein. The HEED—Higher Education Excellence in Diversity—Award is in its 12th year, and Pearlstein said she developed it to celebrate the great work that colleges are doing to advance diversity among their students, faculty, staff and administrators.

Submitted by Wendy Harrison, Paul D. Camp Community College

Astronomer Carl Sagan once noted, “We’re made of star stuff…We long to return,” And while realizing our aspirations can be much like reaching for the stars, 2014 PDCCC graduate Kenya Smith advises, “Do not give up on your dreams. Have faith and stay focused on what you need to do.”

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: Week 6 (Feb. 13 - 17, 2017)
Submitted by Ellen Davenport, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Governmental Relations

With the scheduled “sine die” adjournment date of February 25 approaching next weekend, the 2017 General Assembly is heading down the home stretch. There has been no talk yet of adjourning early, but luckily there has also been no interest of a deadlock on the budget, adjourning later, or having to call a special session in the spring.
