New FACA Tool Keeps Students On-Track

A new tool with a rather indelicate-sounding acronym has launched at all 23 of Virginia’s Community Colleges. The Financial Aid Course Audit tool, or FACA, ensures that our colleges comply with the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Title IV regulations, which affect federal financial aid funds. The programs authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act are the major source of federal student aid. Colleges that participate in Title IV programs are required to ensure that funds are only applied to courses within the student’s program of study.

During FACA’s initial run in fall 2016, approximately 25% of VCCS students were signed up for ineligible coursework.

A little over a month later, and after the last day to drop classes with a refund, that percentage was reduced to a little less than 4% for awarded students across the eight colleges.

In the spring term, when all colleges were live, the results were just as encouraging. During the initial run, which occurred sooner for the spring term, approximately 19% of students were signed up for ineligible coursework.

Three months later, the percentage was again reduced to just shy of 4% for awarded students across the 23 colleges.

GET INVOLVED!
Your tweets and posts can help our students #SlashStudentDebt!

The VCCS is marking National Community College Awareness Month in April with a social media campaign based around the hashtag #SlashStudentDebt. All 23 colleges are participating, and we ask that staff and students join our campaign by sharing the content on your own personal social channels.

Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during April, new content will be posted to the VCCS blog, Facebook page and Twitter account. Take a look and help us spread the word using #SlashStudentDebt!

VHCC Professor Searches for Salamanders
Submitted by Anne Dunham, coordinator of PR & marketing, Virginia Highlands Community College

A passion for science and deep appreciation for the diverse wildlife unique to the Appalachian region guide Dr. Kevin Hamed each time he stands before students at Virginia Highlands Community College. Because his own love for learning was sparked by an energetic teacher who took him out of the classroom and into nature, Dr. Hamed combines classroom lectures with hands-on research – always anxious to introduce students to the remarkable creatures living in the nearby wetlands and forests they might otherwise never visit.
