At Virginia’s Community Colleges, workforce development is what we do best.
In general terms, workforce development is an economic development approach that enhances the economy by focusing on people.
Virginia’s 23 community colleges approach workforce development from a holistic point of view – helping anyone who walks through the doors increase their skill level and find employment, while also working closely with industries in every region to match worker’s skills with current workforce needs.
Community colleges are a main hub for Virginia’s Workforce System. Each of Virginia’s Community Colleges has a dedicated Workforce Development Services Office to help both individuals and businesses through training and programs.
Last year, colleges provided more than 55,000 individuals with workforce related training and helped over 5,700 businesses strengthen their workforce through noncredit training. Additionally, students who received either credit or noncredit training from a Virginia community college earned more than 15,000 industry certifications and professional licensures during Fiscal Year 2016.
Programs and Services for Individuals and Businesses Include:
- Industry Certifications and Professional Licensures Courses
- Skills Assessment through the Career Readiness Certification
- Career Coaching
- Customized training
- Rapid Response in helping with staff restructuring.
A Brand New Day for Workforce Development in the Commonwealth
Elevate Virginia is the state’s collaborative approach to delivering tailored workforce development solutions. The power to Elevate Virginia is rooted in the Commonwealth’s people and its businesses. Whether it is the businesses that already call Virginia home or new companies considering a new location, the strength of the workforce is their primary concern. Virginia’s future economic strength and global competitiveness depend on the readiness of a highly skilled and well-trained workforce to fill the increasingly complex jobs that mark the 21st century economy.
Elevate Virginia focuses state and local leadership on regional labor demands and then engages the training capacity of school divisions, community colleges, workforce investment boards (WIBS), the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC), one stop career centers, job developers, career coaches, community based organizations and a broad spectrum of supportive services to get Virginia’s citizens prepared for high-skilled, high-wage jobs.
