The release of the Governor’s budget proposal for 2015 this week brings the beginning of a new legislative year with General Assembly members returning to Richmond Jan. 14 for a “short” session.
Bills of interest to the VCCS, higher education, and workforce development will be posted on our blog and updated routinely. A number of bills have already been identified. Find them by selecting the “legislative tracking” page from the gray navigation bar above. Links to legislative resources are also found on that page, in the right hand column, including links to the calendar, the Governor’s budget proposals and member directories.
Students from Virginia’s Community Colleges will be traveling to Richmond to visit with their legislators beginning Jan. 15, beginning with Reynolds, Eastern Shore, Mountain Empire and Southside Virginia Community College. All briefings this year will again occur in the PATRICK HENRY BUILDING, in either the East Reading Room (on the first floor) or in Conference Room 3 (on the lower level). The Patrick Henry Building is located at 1111 E. Broad Street, on the south side of Broad Street and to the east of the General Assembly Building in Capitol Square. Watch for profiles of these compelling and diverse students!
Virginia’s Community Colleges are pursuing a 2015 legislative agenda focused on helping more people obtain credentials – degrees, diplomas, and certifications – that will position them for the opportunities of the 21st century. Awarding academic credit for military service, elevating workforce credentials, expanding access to workforce training and boosting competitiveness in the Rural Virginia Horseshoe region are all part of that effort.
