With an eye toward collaboration on future forklift operator training, workforce leaders from Blue Ridge Community College, Central Virginia Community College, Dabney S. Lancaster
Community College, Southside Virginia Community College, and Virginia’s Community Colleges gathered last month at Paul D. Camp Community College (PDCCC) for the chance to learn about this high-demand profession and training.
Forklift operators are responsible for receiving, moving, and distributing materials throughout a warehouse with safety being one of the most important aspects of an operator’s job. The operator is responsible for ensuring that the machine receives the proper maintenance.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2012, the median salary for forklift operators is $31,530.00
With warehouse and distribution facilities constructed in the PDCCC Service Region (close to the Port of Virginia and other businesses needing to move materials), PDCCC’s Division of Workforce Development has delivered customized and open enrollment Forklift Operator Certificate Training to over 700 forklift operators and industry clients.
The success of the training has taken off thanks to local partners, Safco, Franklin – Southampton Charities, and the Camp Foundation, all of which provided essential learning equipment. Amadas Industries offered the Division of Workforce Development evening use of their warehouse to conduct open enrollment training.
PDCCC Forklift Operator Certificate Training is now seen as a best practice throughout the Virginia Community College System.
Demand for forklift operators is increasing each day. By experiencing the training firsthand, workforce leaders now have the knowledge and materials to develop forklift operator training across Virginia.
