More than 250 letters are on their way to veterans and active duty service members, thanks to Danville Community College’s first Letters for Veterans campaign.

Danville Community College (DCC) students, faculty, and staff recently participated in the Letters for Veterans campaign as part of Week to Engage, a service week made possible through a partnership between DCC, Averett University and Piedmont Community College. The letters were mailed on Tuesday, October 25.

The campaign originated at DCC, but garnered support from the entire community.

“Letters were written throughout the week by students from DCC, Averett, the DCC childcare center, and our local high schools. We sent over 250 letters, via Operation Gratitude, to veterans and active duty service members,” said Kirstin Pantazis, DCC transfer and student activities coordinator. “We have a large veteran student population and this was a way for our students, faculty, and staff to show their support and appreciation of our nation’s military.”

Operation Gratitude is a California-based organization that sends care packages to veterans, first responders, new recruits, wounded heroes and their caregivers, and service members deployed overseas and their families.

“The veterans and service members who receive these care packages are often isolated from their families and friends and in need of human connection and appreciation for their sacrifices,” Pantazis explained.

DCC plans to include a Letters for Veterans campaign in future Week to Engage events.

“This campaign provided our students an important opportunity to practice empathy, express gratitude, and experience service as a simple act of giving that can make a big impact on those who receive,” Pantazis said. “Writing a thank-you note didn’t take much time and was something that every student could do.”
