Shane Haupt is a respectful young man. He says “yes sir” a lot and seldom diverts his gaze when engaged in a conversation. Interviewing him was not unlike having a dialogue with a police officer who’s just pulled you over for a minor traffic violation. Very matter-of-fact and did I say polite?
That’s not coincidence. The 20-year old Williamsburg native who’s in his second year at New River Community College, hinted that a career in law enforcement was tugging at his elbow.
“You can spend your entire life serving others. I know that sounds like a cliché, but, it helped to think about everything in life that maybe I wasn’t as interested in. Law enforcement and corrections appealed to me the most.”
During a recent trip to the General Assembly for Every Day is Community College Day, I asked him about his experience at NRCC.
“It’s been great. I’ve got a great adviser in the police science program. He’s an ex-cop himself. He tells it like it is. He helps the students out. He’s been the biggest positive impact for me.”
Haupt was quick to praise the faculty at NRCC as well.
“They know a lot of the students have full-time jobs, families to take care of, and other things going on in their lives. They still expect you to meet the deadlines. But they work with you well and the treatment there is outstanding. And if you have questions, they go beyond their limits to help you answer those.”
Haupt has been the recipient of several scholarships along the way, including Phi Theta Kappa’s Military Promise scholarship and the annual Burke Mottesheard Criminal Justice scholarship.
“It’s an honor to know I can receive that in his name. It’s a real big honor and I’m really thankful for it.”
While he’s still got 45 more credit hours to go before he earns his bachelor’s, Haupt isn’t wasting any time looking for a place to live in Norfolk (he plans to transfer to Old Dominion University later this year). He’s gotten the mountain experience, he says, and now it’s time to head back to the coast.
“I’m hoping when I get to ODU that I’ll be a little ahead of where I would’ve been had I started there. Of course, I’ll find out but I’ve received a great education so far.”
