VCCS faculty members have several additional opportunities this month to familiarize themselves with Canvas, the new Learning Management System (LMS) for all of our colleges statewide.

“From their homes, from poolside, from the beach — wherever there’s wi-fi access, this is a golden opportunity for VCCS faculty to gain proficiency in our new online system for teaching and managing coursework,” said Sheri Prupis, VCCS Director of Teaching & Learning Technologies.

The eLearning and Educational Technology (eLET) committee is continuing its Canvas webinar series.

The VCCS contract with Blackboard, the system’s previous LMS vendor, has expired. Faculty had a year-long transition period to migrate their course work to the new platform.

“Change is hard for everybody. It was hard for us in the beginning,” Gannon Nordberg told a breakout session (below left) at “InstructureCon,” the annual meeting sponsored by the publisher of Canvas earlier this month in Long Beach, California.

Nordberg and Erin Mills are instructional design specialists at Lord Fairfax Community College and were in charge of the transfer to the new LMS.

“We see faculty struggling with the same things that we struggled with early on. So we’re trying to get everyone to the other side as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Because we have seen the light on the other side, we know what opportunities it provides,” added Nordberg.
