Jeffrey Kraus Takes Post with Virginia’s Community Colleges

RICHMOND – Jeffrey J. Kraus, senior advisor and speechwriter for Governor Timothy M. Kaine, will become assistant vice chancellor for public relations for the Virginia Community College System, effective January 15, 2007.

Mr. Kraus has been with Governor Kaine since 2003, when he became director of communications for the office of Lieutenant Governor. He served as deputy director of communications for the Kaine for Governor Campaign and as inaugural press director before serving in his current position.

As senior advisor and speechwriter, he authors speeches for the Governor and is responsible for strategic communications planning. He also serves as the Governor’s liaison for special projects, including the Jamestown 2007 Commemoration.

Prior to his work with Governor Kaine, Mr. Kraus was the state capitol bureau chief for WVIR-TV in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he earned two Douglas Southall Freeman Awards for public service in broadcasting. He also worked as the state capitol reporter and anchor for WCVE-TV and WCVE-FM, providing coverage of state government for Richmond’s public television affiliate and public radio station. He has also served in similar roles, providing news coverage of Virginia state government and politics for the Metro Source national radio network, WTOP News Radio in Washington, DC and for Virginia News Network in Richmond. He is also the former President of the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association.

"Jeff offers a solid background in media and media communications, and I am pleased he will continue to serve the Commonwealth by applying these skills and talents to the ‘workhorse’ of Virginia higher education, our community college system," said Governor Timothy M. Kaine.

"We’re delighted that Mr. Kraus is coming on board," says VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois. "He will bring a strategic communications focus to our public relations activities and will help us create a comprehensive and unified public presence for Virginia’s community colleges."

Mr. Kraus has a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University.
