*FOR VCCS EVENTS CALENDAR, PLEASE SCROLL DOWN

Leadership changes in the governing body of Virginia’s Community Colleges will take effect at the panel’s next meeting, July 17-18. The VCCS State Board will see a new chair and vice-chair, along with three new members appointed by the governor.

“Congress should recognize this reality: community college students are changing, and it’s time for financial aid policies to change, too.” Fresh off testimony to a congressional sub-committee, VCCS Chancellor Glenn DuBois has co-authored a column in _The Hill_, urging lawmakers to expand the availability of Pell Grants to students enrolled in short-term workforce credential programs.

Five VCCS colleges are included in the latest listing of the most Military Spouse Friendly schools in the nation.

The list is based on an annual survey by Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based VIQTORY, which describes itself as a military marketing company that connects the military community to civilian opportunities, and is a companion survey to the firm’s recent Military Friendly Survey (http://www.vccs.edu/vccsblog_post/vccs-colleges-earn-high-marks-in-military-friendly-survey/) .

Earning spots in the 2019-2020 Military Spouse Friendly honor roll are Blue Ridge Community College, Lord Fairfax Community College, Northern Virginia Community College, Piedmont Virginia Community College, and Southwest Virginia Community College.

At community colleges across the state, more than 30,000 students participated in commencement exercises this spring, earning associate degrees in addition to other academic and career credentials. This month, the Chancellor’s Syllabus is offering “pearls of wisdom” from our 2019 VCCS graduation speakers.

Southwest Virginia comes alive with the sound of music — Virginia Highlands Community College songwriting contest draws award-winning musicians to Abingdon, raises money for students emerging from foster care programs.

_OTHER HIGHER ED NEWS OF NOTE:   _

• “Let’s not mince words here: Most of Southwest and Southside Virginia is less educated than Mexico. Is that really where we want to be?” As _The Roanoke Times_ recently found, major portions of rural Virginia are lagging far behind (https://www.roanoke.com/opinion/editorials/editorial-rural-america-lags-behind-mexico/article_0b0b879f-5f01-5864-8b56-cfc9bdc986e0.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=user-share&fbclid=IwAR08aB_JZHQIzZad6MmE0EFmxW_sEKNtLeQpFJzQ53skGPiycDVTmlOPV_E) when it comes to higher education attainment.

• “If you want to come work in our region, we’ll help pay for your education.” The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission creates a “Talent Attraction Program (https://mailchi.mp/tic/tobacco-commission-meets-in-danville) ” to repay student loans in order to lure people to one of the 40 localities in Southwest and Southside Virginia for hard-to-fill jobs.

• The really, really smart kids start at a community college to avoid unnecessary college debt – that’s the take from Dr. Greg DeCinque, interim president of Tidewater Community College in in a recent op-ed (https://pilotonline.com/opinion/columnist/guest/article_543b7b0c-8645-11e9-9b18-c38aa5f3b545.html) in the _Virginian-Pilot_.
