Forty-five percent of the awards were in career technical fields; 55 percent were awarded in academic and transfer-related programs. Reflecting the changing demographics of the students who attend Virginia’s Community Colleges:

• 58 percent of graduates were female
• 40 percent were older than 25 years old .

TNCC’S JOHN DEVER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

After a distinguished higher education career spanning more than four decades, Thomas Nelson Community College President John Dever will retire after the fall 2019 semester. Dever cited health reasons. His service with Virginia’s Community Colleges began at TNCC as an English professor in 1975. Dever also held important leadership posts at BRCC and NVCC. He returned to TNCC as president in 2011.

THOMAS NELSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO GET MAKEOVER

Three of TNCC’S original late-1960’s buildings – described as functional but architecturally undistinguished — will be replaced by a new state-of-the-art three story structure. The VCCS State Board OK’ed the $38-million project at its meeting in May. The 75,000-square-foot building is designed to serve as a new campus hub and a front door to the college, and is meant to feel more like a major four-year flagship institution. The building is scheduled to be finished in late 2022.

Summer may mean leisure time for some folks….but for people in the construction industry, this is the busy season. There are no fewer than two dozen major capital projects underway for Virginia’s Community Colleges, including the project pictured above at JTCC. In today’s “Bricks & Mortar” edition of the Chancellor’s Syllabus, we’ll spotlight several projects that are close to completion.

Projects not funded directly by the state also are moving forward on VCCS campuses. Tidewater Community College’s Real Estate Foundation has recently announced a host of major donations toward TCC’s planned new culinary and visual arts center. The new center comes as TCC starts a Norfolk-based restaurant management program, and also will allow the college to consolidate programs currently scattered in other locations. Situated at the site of the former Norfolk Greyhound bus station, the new center promises to energize the city’s downtown area. Construction is expected to begin in early 2020, and the $18 million dollar facility is scheduled to open in fall 2021.

Paul D. Camp Community College dedicates facility to teach warehouse and logistics courses. Community leaders collaborated on project to fill in-demand vacancies and provide family-supporting job opportunities to residents in southeastern Virginia.

_OTHER HIGHER ED NEWS OF NOTE:   _

Former VCCS employee tapped to be interim president of GMU (https://www2.gmu.edu/news/577936) as of August 1. Anne Holton was an early director of the Great Expectations program.

“We must move from a highly disconnected array of institutions to a more tightly bundled system of community-based education,” argues Kenneth Ender in his op-ed (https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2019/07/01/outgoing-community-college-president-calls-aggressive-shift-communiversity-model?fbclid=IwAR29a9oY5FVBkIn0BCupF5ptHosM2EyJIV8eEK0wazPNMO7KDH_YAeow_2k) in _Inside Higher Ed_.

“Eliminating the barrier of extra years of schooling traditionally required for teacher licensure will encourage more students to pursue teaching careers,” said Virginia Education Secretary Atif Qarni, as the state launched new teacher preparation programs that will let people become teachers (https://www.governor.virginia.gov/newsroom/all-releases/2019/june/headline-841231-en.html) after getting an education degree in four years.

“Those in the community college sector are no strangers to the myths and misconceptions that lead many students and their families to view community colleges as second-class institutions.” – Jonathan Turk in his column (https://www.higheredtoday.org/2019/06/26/erasing-community-college-stigma/) in _Higher Education Today_.
