IN THEIR FIRST TWO YEARS, FASTFORWARD WORKFORCE TRAINING PROGRAMS AT VIRGINIA’S COMMUNITY COLLEGES HAVE ENABLED VIRGINIANS TO EARN MORE THAN 11,000 INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED CREDENTIALS TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREERS. THE STATS SURPASSED EXPECTATIONS, AND THEY WERE SHARED WITH THE VIRGINIA STATE BOARD FOR COMMUNITY COLLEGES AT ITS MEETING JULY 19TH.

ED BREEDEN OF WINCHESTER SOON WILL TRADE HIS JOB AS A LABORER AT A LOCAL SCRAP METAL YARD (ABOVE) FOR AN ADVANCED MANUFACTURING POST, THANKS TO THE FASTFORWARD TRAINING HE RECEIVED AT LORD FAIRFAX COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

In an effort to further understand the impact of FastForward programs and the Virginians it serves — and with an eye on continuous improvement — the VCCS Workforce Division recently surveyed people who earned industry-recognized credentials through FastForward training. Nearly 700 FastForward graduates responded. The survey results are still being analyzed, but here are a few early findings:
• Two-thirds of Workforce Credential Grant participants have dependents
• Respondents reported a 51% increase in health care benefits after FastForward training.
• 93% of respondents indicated they were satisfied or very satisfied with their training experience.

STATE BOARD APPROVES POLICY TO MAINTAIN VCCS ACCESSIBILITY, EFFECTIVENESS, AND EFFICIENCY

At its meeting July 19th, the Virginia State Board for Community Colleges approved a process to examine the sustainability of VCCS institutions. The measure, which focuses on accessibility, effectiveness, and efficiency within the VCCS, is a response to a recommendation from a recent Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) study that identified the lack of any process in VCCS Policy Manual for considering college consolidations and closings.
