Initiative Update: 

Dr. Pat Huber to Become President of New River Community College   

After a national search that attracted more than 90 candidates, New River Community College (NRCC) has a new president. Effective July 1, 2017, Dr. Pat Huber will become the sixth person, and the first woman, to serve as the college’s permanent president. 

Did You Know?

New River Community College …

Opened in 1969 with 424 full-time and part-time students during its first year.
• Currently serves an estimated 4,500 students in the counties of Montgomery, Floyd, Pulaski and Giles and the city of Radford.
Awarded 569 students with a degree in AY 2015-16 (including 205 Associate of Applied Science degrees, 243 Associate of Arts and Sciences degrees, 230 Certificates, and eight Diplomas).
• Graduates are, on average, 26.6 years old (lowest average age in 5 years) and have an average GPA of 3.18 (highest in last five years).


Outstanding Professors Honored

The 2017 New Horizons Conference has come and gone, but a lasting memory from the event is the recognition of two outstanding faculty members for their superb contributions to the art of teaching.

The Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence is presented annually to one teaching faculty member who distinctly represents the teaching excellence found at VCCS colleges. This year’s recipient, Professor Isidora Kessel, assistant professor of Spanish at Thomas Nelson Community College, received a cash award of $5,000 and a VCCS stole.


WCC Begins New Powerline Worker Training Program

The new Powerline Worker Training Program at Wytheville Community College (WCC) now provides the opportunity for students to complete a 14-week program, earn industry-related credentials, and be prepared for employment with a possible starting salary ranging from $15-$20 per hour.


Phi Theta Kappa Luncheon Recognizes Top Students

The VCCS honored its best and brightest students at the 2017 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Virginia Academic Team Awards Program luncheon on April 19 in Richmond.


Caps ‘n Gowns – and – Hard Hats and Safety Vests

As we prepare for another season of commencement activities, keep an eye out for a new group of graduates. An estimated 33,000+ traditional degree- diploma- and certificate-earning graduates will walk across the stages of our colleges. Among them may be more than 1,400 students who completed short-term training programs since Virginia’s Workforce Credentials Grant initiate began July 1.
