Chancellor’s Statewide Syllabus with logo

Monday, September 19, 2016

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the first edition of Statewide Syllabus, a bi-monthly internal news brief for Virginia’s 23 colleges and the System Office. In this and future issues, we will bring you highlights of what’s happening around all our institutions in an effort to increase awareness and sharing of important information. While we can’t cover every great story in such a short format, the Statewide Syllabus is designed to allow you to scan each article and click a link to read more.
I encourage you to do so because it’s important we all stay informed – not just about what’s occurring in your department or at your college – but across the state. Being better informed helps us achieve our Complete 2021 goal to triple the number of credentials our students earn by 2021. We hope you find this information useful and user friendly. I encourage you to check it out, and let us know how we’re doing by submitting story ideas and feedback to the address at the bottom. Thank you.

Glenn DuBois

Did you Know?

110,050 students applied for admission to the VCCS in Fall 2015.

87% of first-time-in-college (FTIC) full-time students enrolled in Fall return for the Spring semester. (Note: 63% of FTIC students are full time.)

64% of FTIC full-time students enrolled in Fall return the following Fall.

33,580 degrees, certificates and diplomas were awarded by VCCS during the 2015-2016 school year, a 7.6% increase over last year.

Initiative Updates

Workforce Credentials Grant:
Historic…transformative…game-changing. People have scrambled to find the right words this year to describe the first-in-the-nation, performance-based program to match Virginians eager to find good jobs with businesses seeking skilled workers.

Student Success:
Chancellor’s Listening Tour – Chancellor DuBois is hitting the road this fall for a statewide Listening Tour to all 23 community colleges to learn about their Student Success efforts. As you may remember, last year, VCCS established a Student Success Leadership Institute to develop collaborative leadership teams – including leaders from all levels – and empower those teams to create a compelling and clear action plan for enhancing the overall student experience, and increasing the number of students who earn certificates, workforce credentials or associate degrees.
