Nathaniel Bishop

Nathaniel Bishop

A focus of Nathaniel Bishop’s career has been to view work in healthcare as a ministry – care for the people who trust their medical concerns to the organization, care for those who prepare men and women for healthcare positions, and care for those who provide the care and services in a variety of roles and settings.

In January of 1975, Bishop began work at the Christiansburg Police Department as their first African American police officer and was later promoted to investigator. He served there until 1988 when he left to begin a career in healthcare as an administrator with the Roanoke United Methodist Home.

In June 2010, Bishop was inaugurated as president of the Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke.

Bishop earned his associate degree in criminal justice from New River Community College, his bachelor’s from Radford University, a master of science in education degree from Virginia Tech, and a doctor of ministry degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.

Bishop and his wife Sylvia, both life members of the NAACP, currently reside in Christiansburg, VA.
