John T. Casteen III

Charlottesville, Virginia

John T. Casteen, III, retired in 2010 as the president of the University of Virginia, a position he has held since 1990. His distinguished career includes serving as president of the University of Connecticut from 1985-1990, and as Virginia’s Secretary of Education from 1982 until 1985. Previous to those appointments he served as U.Va.’s dean of admissions and taught English at the University of Virginia and the University of California-Berkeley. Among many achievements during his tenure at the University of Virginia, the university was recognized for its leadership in educating minority students and for pursuing guaranteed transfer agreements with Virginia’s Community Colleges. In March 2010, Mr. Casteen was honored as the Virginian of the Year, the highest citizen honor given by the Virginia Press Association.
