Regional Centers for Teaching Excellence
The Virginia Community College System includes five Regional Centers for Teaching Excellence (RCTE). The centers aim to offer professional development sessions that address the teaching, learning, and technology education needs of faculty; to promote interdisciplinary knowledge and resource sharing on topics of regional and systemwide importance; and to foster innovative teaching, learning, and student success practices via education and training opportunities as needed, on-demand.
What is the RCTE about?
- Regional colloquia for the VCCS faculty
- Instructional leadership
- Mentoring programs to enhance teacher effectiveness
- Clearinghouses for articles, monographs and resources related to community college teaching and learning
RCTE provide a forum for dialogue, reflection and enhancement of teaching, and modeling an innovative learning community.
RCTE provide a forum for dialogue and reflection on the art and practice of teaching by focusing on four themes:
RCTE embrace the following principles:
- Providing a forum for cross-institutional professional interaction
- Modeling co-learner environments
- Discovering the art of teaching as a developmental process
- Cultivating a community of reflective practitioners
- Building collective ethical wisdom
- Advancing instructional methods through experimentation and innovation
- Fostering cross-discipline collegiality and collaboration
- Recognizing and celebrating diversity
The Five Regional Centers
Each RCTE is led by a Chair who coordinates several professional development programs and events for faculty at colleges in the region. RCTE Chairs nurture teaching excellence throughout the VCCS via regional delivery of high-interest, high-impact, high-demand professional development programming for both full-time and adjunct faculty.
