Post-Secondary Perkins

The intent of the Carl D. Perkins Act of 1998 (also known as Perkins III), is to ensure continuous improvement of career and technical education programs offered at both secondary and post-secondary levels. The VCCS Workforce Development Services division is responsible for administering Perkins programs at the post-secondary level.

For the 2004-05 academic year, over $3.8 million was distributed to local community colleges for the purpose of improving the quality of career and technical education programs. Each college worked with the VCCS to design strategies that were most beneficial to their specific region’s workforce needs.

During the 2004-2005 academic year, with the aid of Perkins funds, over 850 students participated in career enhancement activities, such as business and industry tours, job shadowing, cooperatives, workshops and mentoring and over 300 faculty were able to participate in professional development activities to enhance occupational and technical programs.
