Interim President Named for Tidewater Community College

RICHMOND – Peter A. Spina, of Honeoye Falls, New York, will become interim president at Tidewater Community College (TCC), announced Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges. Spina will assume the presidency at Tidewater on March 1, when current President Deborah DiCroce leaves to become president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit Hampton Roads Community Foundation.

“Peter is one of the nation’s most highly regarded community college leaders,” said DuBois.  “With him on board, Tidewater won’t miss a beat in moving forward, as it secures its next permanent president.” Spina is expected to be at the helm at the college for up to about six months, or until DiCroce’s successor is named.

Currently a higher education consultant, Spina is president emeritus of Monroe Community College in Rochester. After retiring from Monroe, he became executive director of the Institute for Community College Development in Cornell. He also served for many years as a director and officer of the League for Innovation in the Community College.

He served as an interim president once before for Virginia’s Community Colleges, filling in at Thomas Nelson in 2003-04 when a search for a permanent president was under way there. After leaving TNCC, he served for four years as interim president at the State University of New York Institute of Technology, Utica.

Spina holds a doctorate in higher education administration from New York University and has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University at Albany. He was recognized in a University of Texas study as one of 50 national community college transformational leaders.

About Virginia’s Community Colleges: Created more than 40 years ago, the VCCS is comprised of 23 community colleges located on 40 campuses across the commonwealth.
