Professional Development in Virginia's Community Colleges

Welcome to the central source for information about the Virginia Community College System Office of Professional Development. Our opportunities are available to the faculty, administration, and staff of the VCCS and are second to none.

This vibrant state-wide program was started in 1992-1993 to promote faculty development in the following areas:

  • Discipline development - builds knowledge and skills within the academic discipline or professional speciality.
  • Instructional development - improves classroom teaching, learning, and  assessment techniques.
  • Career development - provides tools for effective personal planning to improve the quality of  work and life.
  • Organizational development - enhances administrative and leadership skills to  fulfill the institutional mission of the community college.

Please take a moment to look through our offerings listed on the left and see what the system can do for you.

VCCS Professional Development e-News
August 25, 2009

Cash for clunkers, lemons to lemonade, silver linings – you get the picture. In these difficult economic times there are opportunities to be seized and, yes, even good things happening. This has always been the case with the VCCS professional development program as people from across the state serve passionately and effectively on the Professional Development Committee (PDC), as chairs for the Regional Centers for Teaching Excellence, and as a whole host of recipients of our programs. We are “out there” supporting our faculty and staff and, ultimately, our students and communities. As we embark upon another year, I would like to thank the State Board, our Chancellor, system office staff, and our colleagues in the field for their generous support of all we do.Thank you!

'best,

Nan Ottenritter
Director of Professional Development
