New Faculty Seminar 2011

The VCCS Office of Professional Development is pleased to announce our New Faculty Seminar to be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 555 E. Canal St., Richmond, VA, 23219. Open to faculty (adjunct and full-time alike) hired by the VCCS within the last year, the New Faculty Seminar runs noon to noon, November 14-15, 2011. Remember: the seminar is open to the first 150 registrants.

The seminar begins and ends with faculty networking with faculty from across the state. A noon luncheon begins the event and is followed by ½ day focused on many of the resources offered by the VCCS and features presenters from across the system. Join us for a wonderful dinner, followed by a second day ½ day focused on good teaching and learning philosophies, strategies, and tips.

We are pleased to feature Dr. Milton D. Cox, PhD of the Center for Teaching at Vanderbilt University and the Center for the Enhancement of Learning, Teaching, and University Assessment at Miami University. He will present on Meeting the Teaching Challenges of Being New.

“The challenges of being new at an institution have been researched, and this workshop will include findings in the form of effective strategies and approaches to become a quick starter. Topics will alternate between tips for basic teaching practices and  for explorations of complex approaches. Examples include tips for presenting with confidence, engaging small groups, and cognitive development theories that will help you understand and modify student behavior.”

Come join us!

                 Did you know?

Over 50% of the new faculty who attend  the conference rate the conference excellent, the rest say it is very good.

"I was very appreciative of the opportunity for adjunct faculty to attend. That was a GREAT IDEA! Let's please do it again!!

When asked what are the top highlights of the conference, 95% stated networking among colleagues is the number 1 highlight, followed by great sessions.

"I attend frequent business conferences, between 10-15 per year -- this outshined them all -- in terms of location, food, content and quality. And most importantly people who truly wanted to network, talk and share experiences. Excellent job!"
