Welcome to the central source for information about the Virginia Community College System Office of Professional Development. Our opportunities are available to the faculty, administration, and staff of the VCCS and are second to none.
This vibrant state-wide program was started in 1992-1993 to promote faculty development in the following areas:
- Discipline development - builds knowledge and skills within the academic discipline or professional specialty.
- Instructional development - improves classroom teaching, learning, and assessment techniques.
- Career development - provides tools for effective personal planning to improve the quality of work and life.
- Organizational development - enhances administrative and leadership skills to fulfill the institutional mission of the community college.
Please take a moment to look through our offerings listed on the left and see what the system can do for you.

The Office of Professional Development is proud to announce a new initiative for the 2013 - 2014 academic years – the VCCS Faculty Learning Communities Initiative. Last year the VCCS offered a hybrid faculty learning community, attended by ten faculty from throughout the system and focused on good teaching and learning. Their thoughts:
“Keep growing them, like mushrooms.”
“I think we all benefited by participating. I think others should have the same opportunity.”
“The notion that we could all grow in our own ways while all contributing to one single whole was a highlight. “
Stay tuned for more information about how you can become trained as a facilitator or participate in this renewing learning opportunity for faculty.
